Mankind has always had an interest in the afterlife and ghosts. Myth and folklore have been the primary literary source for documenting paranormal activity for centuries. In those tales we hear wild tales of the dead returning to haunt the living or of house spirits that can be beneficial or mischievous. These come from old tales told and re-told through the centuries before they were written down. It seems mankind’s fascination with the realm of the spirits dates bake even before recorded history.
During the 1800’s the telling of ghosts stories and making contact with the dead gained a new life. Interest in making contact with the dearly departed skyrocketed and became a part of the mainstream culture. Many charlatans and authentic mediums rose up to offer the opportunity for the living to communicate with the dead. The Spiritualism movement developed new techniques such as the séance, trance mediumship, table tipping, Ouija boards, and photographing ectoplasm and spirits. Though the remaining evidence is certainly provocative, it is not definitive.
As we enter the modern era, interest in contact with the spirit world remains just as pervasive. Modern investigators still use psychics, trance mediumship and séances, all with the intention of collecting anecdotal evidence of contact. They are also equipped with a plethora of scientific instruments including K2 meters, laser thermometers, audio recorders and cameras that can record images from infrared to ultraviolet wavelengths. All of this is in hopes that the subjective evidence corroborates with the scientific evidence to validate that an actual paranormal experience took place.
Just like the ancient people, we still like to tell ghost stories. Movies and television programs have excelled at stretching personal accounts of paranormal events in order to make a scary story. Unfortunately, these story tellers present their fictional narratives so well that many people believe that this is how actual paranormal activity is experienced. A majority of people have gained a distorted image of what spiritual contact is like. When a person as an actual paranormal encounter they are often surprised at how calm and enlightening the experience was and that it was completely unlike anything depicted in the movies.
A majority of paranormal encounters are not actually hauntings or poltergeist activity. The encounter happens when contact is made with higher level beings that have much to share with the world. People like Edgar Casey, JZ Knight, Chico Xavier, and Sheila Gillette have become famous because of their connection with spirit. Their methodology is often that of trance mediumship where they enter into a deep meditative state and a spirit comes to speak through their body. This is actually an ancient practice that is still viable in many places in the world including Africa, the Caribbean, Bali, and Thailand.
Overall, the experience of spiritual contact is a positive one. That is, if you allow yourself to see beyond the hype and fear that is projected by the entertainment media. While science continues to attempt to validate what the ancients have always known, you can take personal steps to push aside the veil and experience a reality that you are already a part of. Remember, you are a spirit having a human experience.
