Have you ever talked to a rock or a coffee cup? As you fumbled with an inanimate object—say a door, key, or hammer—have you cussed it out when the tool did not perform as you had expected? Perhaps you had a mindful conversation with a stuffed animal or a photograph? What would happen if these inanimate objects actually responded to you? Maybe they could even understand your intentions and perform exactly as you anticipated. No, this is not the surreal world “beyond the looking glass,” as imagined by Lewis Carroll. Rather, these are scientific theories being posed by cutting edge Noetic Sciences.
Mind you, it is impossible for a coffee cup to grow a mouth and speak. Just as it is impossible for a hammer to pick itself up and drive nails of its own being. However, Noetic Science suggests a notion that there may be a trace of consciousness that permeates all things in the universe. This is not to say that the hammer has a mind of its own. Rather, Noetics suggests that you may be able to form a conscious connection with the solid material of a hammer. Then, using your own guided will, you can direct the path and the force of the hammer so that it does just as you want it to do.
If this is true, then there must be some universal level of consciousness that can be detected and measured at the quantum level. This universal consciousness theory was part of Dan Brown’s book, The Lost Symbol. This is not at all dissimilar to Carl Jung’s postulate of a collective unconscious. This is the theory is that all intelligent creatures share a greater collective mind that can permeate all things. Noetic Sciences seeks a way to collect empirical evidence to support this theory.
There may be a distinct connection with William S. Burroughs’s discipline of Do Easy. He describes this philosophy as, “…simply mean[ing] doing whatever you do in the easiest most relaxed way you can manage, which is also the quickest and most efficient way…” While this may not be a direct reference to Noetic Science, the application of this philosophy overlaps with the use of Noetics. DE teaches one to become aware of their environment, make a conscious connection, and then perform all actions while fully present and aware of the moment. Noetics suggest that we can connect to a universal consciousness, inherent in all things, and realize our intentions through that awareness.
Before this connection can be made, and this language understood, you must first learn the nature of your own consciousness. This is first done through careful introspection and self-analysis; you must learn how you think and discover what lies beneath your thought process. This can be done through contemplative meditation. Coinciding with this introspection is external exploration. Reach out to the world around you with your intentions to apply Noetic theory, experimenting with any of the theoretical applications.
There are many popular theoretical applications of Noetic Sciences. Perhaps the most famous is The Secret, which suggests that stating an intention and expecting it happen will cause it to manifest. Another popular application is Remote Viewing, where a person’s consciousness can leave the body and observe distant locations. Bruce Lipton's The Biology of Belief, discusses the connection of the mind to the state of health in the body, at the molecular and atomic levels. Howard Martin suggests a similar connection with his concepts in Heart Math.
Noetic Science is an exciting field of study that may have far reaching implications for the whole of mankind. We already know there is a direct connection between consciousness, intention, and manifestation. As the scientists continue to unravel the mysteries of consciousness they may soon discover that there really is some quantum field that permeates all matter. If so, this detectable and measurable force may be what propels mankind into a new state of being.
